Rapid prototyping (3d printing) or other appropriate process to allow proof of concept and basic testing before manufacture. Rapid prototypes are a very cost and time effective and way to get a basic physical representation of the final product.  There are still limitations to prototypes as they do not possess the same strength and material accuracy of a moulded part and should be used only as a guide.
